Articles of jewelry made, c. 1835-50 at the time of the Gothic Revival movement in England and France imitating the styles of the Middle Ages. It includes buckles, brooches, and bracelets decorated with figures in the round of angels, saints, knights in armour, and pages and ladies in medieval costume, all against a background of ogival forms.
It is said to have been introduced by its leading exponent, Francois-Désiré Froment-Meurice. Sometimes called 'Romantic Gothic', it is wholly unrelated to the Goth jewelry of the Dark Ages or the gothic jewelry of the 14th/15th centuries.
