Tinted gold

Articles of gold coloured by gilding the surface to provide a different hue. It was done mainly in the 19th century to conceal repairs when a matching gold was not available or when necessary to conceal oxidation resulting from soldering an article decorated with engraving or engine-turning where damage to the design might result from use of a bath of sulphuric acid.
