A term used erroneously in the antique trade to designate certain articles (mainly snuff boxes) made at a number of Russian centres in the early 19th century with decoration with an alloy similar to niello, and having as decorative motifs figures, flowers, geometrical forms, and sometimes maps. The term 'tula' strictly applies to an alloy of silver, copper, and lead that was made at Tula, in Russia, south of Moscow, and that was used in such work.
