Most unique 18th century choker necklace, gold filigree, garnet stones, Rococo style, circa 1770's, crafted in Netherlands, excellent condition… A touch of history.
We have no clue why a bootjesketting is called a bootjesketting. Bootjesketting is Dutch and translated to English it would be something like "chain of little boats". One thing is sure and that the bootjesketting is part of the typical Dutch jewelry heritage. Some descriptions in museums describe this as typical for the northern Dutch provinces Groningen and Friesland. We have strong doubts that this is the case because besides this example made in Amsterdam in the Eighteenth Century there is also an example of one made in Rotterdam and can be found in the collection of Museum Rotterdam (see this link).
Today most of the Bootjeskettings found are made in 19th Century or even 20th Century. It is extremely rare to find one of the 18th Century.
Antique jewelry object group: necklace
Condition: very good condition - The back of the necklace seems to be in a very wrinkled condition but we recognise this as only normal
for an old bootjesketting. Considering it is a bootjesketting it can be still described as being in a very good condition for a bootjesketting.

Country of origin:
Netherlands, Amsterdam
Style:
Rococo - Rococo (less commonly roccoco) also referred to as "Late Baroque" is an 18th century style which developed as Baroque artists gave up their symmetry and became increasingly more ornate, florid, and playful. Rococo rooms were designed as total
works of art with elegant and ornate furniture, small sculptures, ornamental mirrors, and tapestry complementing architecture, reliefs, and wall paintings. It was largely supplanted by the Neoclassic style. In 1835 the Dictionary of the French Academy
stated that the word Rococo "usually covers the kind of ornament, style and design associated with Louis XV's reign and the beginning of that of Louis XVI". It includes therefore, all types of art produced around the middle of the 18th century in
France.

Technique:
Filigree (formerly written filigrann or filigrane) is a delicate kind of jewel work made with twisted threads usually of gold and silver or stitching of the same curving motifs. It often suggests lace and French from 1660 to the late 19th century. It
should not be confused with ajoure jewellery work; while both have many open areas, filigree involves threads being soldered together to form an object and ajoure involves holes being punched, drilled, or cut through an existing piece of metal. (from: Wikipedia)
