Antique 18K Gold Ring with Granulation and Filigree, Circa 1780 – A Reflection of Georgian Elegance

This Georgian period 18K gold ring, circa 1780, is a beautiful example of intricate craftsmanship, with its graceful filigree and delicate granulation. The design features a softly curved rectangular plaque, framed by fine filigree and small granule "spider" motifs. The openwork filigree band transitions into a twisted wire pattern, adding texture and movement to the piece. Imagine wearing a ring of such top-tier quality, crafted over 200 years ago—a timeless treasure that embodies both sophistication and artistry.

Style
Georgian - Georgian style is the name given in most English-speaking countries to the set of styles current between 1720 and 1840. It is eponymous for the first four British monarchs of the House of Hanover—George I of Great Britain, George II of Great Britain, George III of the United Kingdom, and George IV of the United Kingdom—who reigned in continuous succession from August 1714 to June 1830.

Technique
Granulation is a technique where the goldsmith uses very small balls (granules) of metal, which are not soldered to the piece but welded. This technique demand very high skills and precision from the maker. And filigree (formerly written filigrann or filigrane) which is a delicate kind of jewel work made with twisted threads usually of gold and silver or stitching of the same curving motifs. It often suggests lace and French from 1660 to the late 19th century. It should not be confused with ajoure jewellery work; while both have many open areas, filigree involves threads being soldered together to form an object and ajoure involves holes being punched, drilled, or cut through an existing piece of metal.
