Post-War Luxe: Heirloom Emerald & Diamond Engagement Ring

This ring, a harmonious blend of fifties flair and Art Deco's geometric elegance, tells a tale of timeless commitment. Crafted around 1950, it carries the era's spirit, touching the threshold of Retro and Art Deco styles with its platinum gleam and bold design. At its heart, a 2.20ct untreated emerald, encircled by 14 old mine-cut diamonds totalling approximately 2.24ct, whispers stories of ancient Roman betrothals and the enduring tradition of engagement rings that became standardised with diamonds in the West around the 1930s. Each stone is a testament to natural beauty and authenticity, echoing a history of love's promise.

Style: Although most people would call this style Art Deco it is more considered to be a product of the fifties of the Twentieth Century. Strongly influenced by Art Deco but also by the Retro style. That to most people this is Art Deco is no coincidence as both Retro style and Fifties style are the style successors of Art Deco. or more info on styles

Style specifics: This type of jewelry is very specific for the fifties of the twentieth century. The Art Deco period preceded only 20 years and was still used as source of inspiration, it is (even for the trained eye) sometimes very hard to note the difference between Art Deco and Fifties.

Extra information: Betrothal rings were used during Roman times, but weren't generally revived in the Western world until the 13th century. The first well-documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his betrothal to Mary of Burgundy.

Before the 20th century, other types of betrothal gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the bride-to-be frequently received a sewing thimble rather than a engagement ring. This practice was particularly common among religious groups that shunned jewelry. Engagement rings didn't become standard in the West until the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings didn't become common until the 1930s. Now, 80% of the women are offered a diamond ring to signify engagement. (from: Wikipedia)
