VINTAGE WATERMAN GREEN FOUNTAIN PEN 1930
A touch of history ...
VINTAGE WATERMAN GREEN FOUNTAIN PEN.
Some background information on Waterman:
Lewis Edson Waterman was born in 1837 at Decatur, Otsego County, New york, where he
received a limited education. At the age of sixteen he moved with his family to Illinois.
The entrepreneur in him showed at an early age when he worked as a carpenter during the
summer months and, as a result of self-instruction, as a school teacher during the winter.
He then became a publisher's agent, a teacher of shorthand and finally an insurance agent.
In the early 1880's L.E. Waterman was selling life insurance in New York City. This was a very competitive field and all applications had to be signed with ink. On one occasion,
having completed an application for a large policy with one of the fountain pens of the day, Waterman met his client for the all-important signing. His pen however, let him down and, instead of recording the signature, flooded ink over the document,
ruining the application. Although he hastily prepared a duplicate application, a rival broker took advantage of the situation and secured
the business for himself. It was after this incident that Waterman recognized there was a need
for a dependable fountain pen. Using his natural mechanical talents, he set out to develop one.
And that is how the Waterman pen business started !
