A long pin for securing a lady's hat, used especially from Victorian times until c. 1940. Its head was decorated with ornaments of various materials and in many styles, including gemstones, jet, jade, ornaments of glass (e.g. a coloured bead, a flower, a bird, etc.) or metal (e.g. gold or silver), etc.
